Welcome to the Unyts Health Blog! Through this blog, we hope to get you thinking about healthy choices that we have the opportunity to make everyday in life.  Our mission here at Unyts is to save and enhance lives, and on that, we’re following through with our message here. We hope that you’ll continue to read our weekly blog. You may just read some life-saving information.

Ending your relationship with Tobacco

Quitting smoking will likely be one of the most challenging experiences many people face, but is so essential to having a healthy relationship with your body!  Talking with your doctor is a great place to start, once you’ve decided to quit.  It will help you to get started and will also give you some insight into all of the amazing health benefits you will reap as a non-smoker.  Once you’ve resolved to quit, here are some tips I gathered from my parents, who both recently became non-smokers after smoking for more than 30 years!

1.  Ask family and friends for support.  The same way a fitness buddy helps to keep you motivated, telling your close circle that you’re trying to quit will help you stay on track.  Since your family and friends want to see you live a long and healthy life, they will be great support on your quit-smoking journey.

2.  Ease into an exercise regimen. Since people who smoke often find cardio exercise difficult, beginning an exercise regimen, even if it is just taking daily walks, will help you feel great and make you less likely to reach for a cigarette after you’ve done all that hard work

3.  Make a list of your personal reasons for quitting. Whether you’d like to save money, improve your career outlook, or change your social image, most people have multiple reasons to quit smoking.  Make a list and read through it every day, and picture what your life will be like as a non-smoker.  Tell yourself that each day without smoking is living your goal!

Bucket List Bash A Big Success

Rebecca, from the Buffalo Jills, welcoming guests

Over 400 people came out to help celebrate life at the 1st annual “Bucket List Bash”.  From the moment guests walked through the doors of the Statler, they were greeted with friendly faces and knew they were in for a fun night ahead!

Joe Arena, from WIVB-TV, asks guests about thier "Bucket List"

News 4′s Joe Arena welcomed guests  as they entered for a night of food, drinks and fun! He found out what party goers had on their bucket list. Some even had the chance to cross a few things off that list!

Sumo Wrestling

Can you imagine a jousting ring inside the Statler? Check out the Sumo Wrestling ring. It was a popular station inside the Golden Ballroom. Whether you wanted to learn to salsa dance, sing like a rockstar or have fun on the bungee run, this party was the place to do it all!

Pizza Eating Contest

14 bucket list stations kept party goers busy for hours, and with plenty of food and drinks, everyone had a great time. What a great opportunity to share the important message of the mission here at Unyts.

Kudos to all of the volunteers!

Special thanks to all of our sponsors for the night!

This is a blog post from Heather, an intern in the Community Relations Department:

I am a Senior at the Unversity at Buffalo, and graduate in May of this year. I’m glad to be interning here since Organ Donation is an issue so close to my heart. My mother received a Kidney Transplant from my Uncle about 7 years ago now on Valentine’s Day. That transplant saved her life, and has allowed to continue being one of the greatest people I have ever known. I am so greatful to my Uncle for giving the selfless give of Life. My mom still calls and thanks him every year on their “anniversary” and she says there will never be enough words to thank him for what he’s given her. The gift of Blood has also saved my own life when I was born 3 months prematurely in 1989. A total of 8 blood transfusions allowed to continue fighting for my life, which I’m glad I was given a chance from the numerous blood donors that have also give the gift of life. It has been a great experience interning here and learning more about GIVING THE GIFT OF LIFE, and being able to better inform those in the community just how important it is.

One event since interning here at Unyts I’ve been looking forward to is the Bucket List Bash. This semester I have been helping to spread the word about this new and exciting upcoming event, by posting flyers around the Buffalo area. I thought the idea of a “Bucket List Bash” sounded like a great idea. There were so many people there with excitement on their faces, and laughter heard everywhere throughout the Statler that night. Things that people have on their bucket lists were available. Whether you go to go on your dream vacation to Paris, Africa, or Las Vegas, or get knocked out in the boxing ring. My personal favorites were getting to sumo wrestle my boyfriend knocking him down, and later getting my palm read using tarot cards by the mediums provided for the night. Attendants also had the chance to “get a tattoo”, get a caricature done of themselves, and be a rockstar for the entire group of people to hear. One thing on my bucket list is to also learn to Salsa dance, or compete in a food eating contest. Unyts also had a raffle to go skydiving, or get plane tickets to see Jay Leno or Anderson Cooper. From my friends and co-workers that attended the event, we couldn’t agree more about the fact that we wish the event lasted all night long, and absolutely cannot wait for next year. I had such a great time and  I can’t imagine it being any better!
