The girls lacrosse team at East Aurora High School had senior game night on May 8th. Each year they celebrate the life of Mike Schafer, who was an organ donor and also started the Booster Club at East Aurora High School.
The team wears green jerseys to celebrate Mike and to raise awareness about the importance of donation.
Thanks for spreading the word about donation!

Whether you once needed someone’s blood, or you’re just a giving person, we want our blood donors to know how much they’re appreciated. That’s what “Share Your Story” is all about, and we’re highlighting a different donor each month.
Lauren Wager

“It’s the easiest way to be someone’s superhero!”
“For me, blood donation has always been such an obvious way to help people. As a donor, I lose a few minutes and a little bit of blood in order to save a life!
I had a close friend pass away from Leukemia. While she was in the hospital, she spent hours making bracelets to sell. The profits from the bracelets went toward buying Build-A-Bears for the other children at Roswell’s Pediatric Unit. She proved the immense impact a single individual can have on many people in need, and I use blood donation as my way of carrying on this legacy of compassion and charity.”

*If you would like us to “Share your Story” of blood donation, please let us know!

Unyts was a sponsor for the 1st annual Recycle Fest in conjunction with Global Youth Service Day.
We were only expecting about 50 kids to help canvass the Kensington and Eggert neighborhood. We had over 60 kids show up in the neighborhood to hear the benefits of recycling and about what to recycle. In addition, they invited the neighbors to attend RecycleFest, which was held at the Community Charter School. There were games, food, composting and many prizes.

Unyts donated 12 bison’s hats, 15 Anderson’s milkshake gift certificates, a signed Sabres jersey.
A big thank you goes out everyone who helped make the 1st annual Recycle Fest a success!

Unyts would like to thank Volkswagon of Orchard Park for being our Donate Life partner for the month of April. Volkswagon of Orchard Park donated $25 gas cards to our first 100 blood donors.

Our blood donors wanted to show their appreciation to Volkswagon, so they sent these cards to the folks at VW of Orchard Park.

How to Fight Fatigue

If you consistently find yourself tired throughout the day, there are several small changes you can make to help get your energy back up!
1. Get enough sleep. This may sound obvious, but make sure you are getting the right amount of sleep for your age and activity level. Be sure to ask your doctor if you aren’t sure.
2. Consume caffeine in moderation. While caffeine may help you get moving in the morning, consuming caffeine later in the day and at night can cause fatigue and may prevent you from achieving a quality sleep cycle. While coffee is the obvious offender, other foods such as chocolate and tea also contain caffeine, so be sure to read your labels.

3. Eat breakfast. Studies have shown that those who skip breakfast are often faced with fatigue during the day. Make sure you get a fiber and protein rich breakfast in each day, even if you’re on the go.
4. Exercise regularly. Making it a habit to get about an hour of physical activity per day has been proven to have positive effects on your body, including on your energy. This will also come with the many other benefits exercise has to offer!

Cliff Benson, Sabres Chief Development officer, donates blood for Unyts
What a fantastic turnout for the Unyts/Buffalo Sabres blood drive on Monday, March 18th.
Blood donors were ready and waiting before it even opened, hoping to score an exclusive Sabres baseball cap, donated by New Era.
All donors who made appointments were able to take a tour of the locker room, which was a huge draw for diehard Sabres fans!

By the end of the day, over 160 donors came out to the First Niagara Center to donate blood, which helps keep safe levels at area hospitals.
Unyts is the primary supplier of blood for Kaleida Health, ECMC, and all the hospitals in Niagara and Wyoming Counties.
It takes a lot to keep a large blood drive running smoothly, and we had a lot of help from high school Donate Life Clubs. We couldn’t have done it without your help!

If you weren’t able to make it to the blood drive, but would like to donate blood, just make an appointment at a site near you!

Whether you once needed someone’s blood, or you’re just a giving person, we want our blood donors to know how much they’re appreciated. That’s what “Share Your Story” is all about, and we’re highlighting a different donor each month.

Robert McKenna
I started donating at Lockort Memorial over 4 years ago. My wife worked and volunteers at the hospital, and I came to know Unyts at a hospital drive. After donating whole blood I received a letter from Unyts to let me know that I was a good candidate for donating platelets.
After finding out more about the procedure and that the product has a short shelf life, I felt the need was greater to donate platelets. I began donating religiously every 2 weeks. I enjoy the 2 hours with the staff. The joke at my house is that I donate every 2 weeks for a couple of hours to give my wife some peace and quiet.
I know that all the products that Unyts collects stay right here in WNY. That matters to me. I want to donate where it will do the most good.
Mr. McKenna has completed 2 straight years of 24 donations in one year. What an amazing guy!

The eyes have it
If you were to ask someone on the street how someone can maintain or improve their eye health, they would likely say carrots, since they contain the nutrient beta-carotene which turns into retinol after ingestion, which helps maintain good eye health. However, there are other foods that can help accomplish this as well! Some great examples are:
Green, leafy vegetables such as spinach.
Salmon, tuna, or other oily fish
Eggs, nuts, beans and other non-meat protein sources
Oranges and other citrus fruits or juices
Other easy tips for keeping your eyes healthy is quitting smoking (smoking linked to an increased risk of cataracts and optic nerve damage) , and wearing sunglasses that protect against UV rays while outside. Maintaining a healthy weight is also essential, as type 2 diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults.
